HERRON & SONS HARDWARE

One of Boyne City's early pioneers, Mr. A. F. Herron came to Boyne in 1676 and homesteaded 120 acres of land near there. In 1897. A.F. Herron andhis son Clint, opened one of Boyne's most substantial business houses. In keeping with the demands of the time, the store was actually a hardware emporium, where every item under the general term “hardware" could be found.

Dealers in both wholesale and retail trade, they drew business from all parts of this section of the state. Not only did they stock a complete line of hardware, but they also offered stoves, ranges, furnaces, guns, ammunition, fishing tackle and horse hardware.

Another valuable addition to the firm was that of Herron S Powers Practical Plumbing and Heating which supplied local residents with the most modem plumbing and heating systems. In 1904. Michigan Bell Telephone Company set up an exchange on the second floor of the hardware building and C. J. Herron became the first Michigan Bell Manager.
